SUMMARY:Tax Traps of Illiquid Assets: Minimizing Missteps to Maximize Gifts
DESCRIPTION:Save the Date! \nJennifer Babisak \nTaking of Illiquid Assets \nJennifer joined HighGround Advisors in 2022 as Associate General Counsel\, where she provides legal guidance to nonprofit organizations. In her capacity\, she specializes in navigating the complexities of charitable law\, offering insights into gift requirements\, and advising on the handling of non-cash assets. Jennifer’s role includes monitoring state and federal legislation\, ensuring that nonprofits stay informed about potential impacts and remain compliant. In addition to her work with organizations\, she also counsels individual donors in matters of charitable tax and estate planning. \nPrior to HighGround\, Jennifer worked as a writer\, editor\, and researcher for law firms\, industry-leading corporations\, and nonprofits\, including education and child welfare law and policy organizations. She holds a bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas\, an MBA from Concordia University\, Nebraska\, and a JD from Loyola University Chicago. Jennifer is a member of the Dallas Estate Planning Council as well as the national and Dallas chapters of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners. \n  \nDescription: Non-cash assets represent a significant source of potential charitable contributions\, yet achieving optimal outcomes with these gifts requires expertise and due diligence. Before accepting an illiquid gift\, a charitable organization should take steps to understand potential tax and legal obligations for both the organization and the donor. This presentation will discuss wide-ranging tax cautions\, including appraisal requirements for real estate\, minerals interests\, and other illiquid assets; partial interest and excess benefit concerns; IRS documentation requirements; and pointers for other nuanced gifts such as artisan donations\, closely held securities\, life estates\, and royalties. \nDate: 2/9/2026 \nTime: 11:30am – 12:00pm for networking\, Meeting starts at 12pm. \nRSVP for this luncheon
