Shelby Newton Goodrum

This session will explore how trusted advisors can meaningfully engage clients in conversations about philanthropy—a topic often overlooked in traditional advisory roles. Drawing from real-world experience, the types of questions used to uncover a client’s personal values and charitable interests, and how these insights shape giving strategies will be shared. We’ll also discuss practical approaches to evaluating nonprofit organizations amid the overwhelming number of choices, including how to ensure alignment with and adherence to a client’s goals and values. The presentation will include client stories that illustrate successful philanthropic partnerships and outcomes and an overview of the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy® (CAP®) program.

Shelby Newton Goodrum, CAP®, is a philanthropic advisor serving high-net-worth individuals and family foundations. She prioritizes building trusting relationships and offers confidential, customized services—protected by NDAs—that help clients achieve their values-aligned philanthropic goals.

Shelby partners with families and organizations to address their unique needs and challenges. Her tailored support includes defining mission and vision, crafting governance policies, operationalizing grantmaking processes, identifying and evaluating potential grant partners, and onboarding the next generation of board members. For those seeking ongoing engagement, she provides continued guidance and strategic counsel.

Known for her thoughtful approach, Shelby fosters open and productive conversations by asking insightful questions, listening attentively, and maintaining strict confidentiality.

Shelby’s commitment to community and social impact was recently recognized when she was selected to join Leadership Austin, a platform that brings together diverse leaders to collaborate and address systemic issues affecting Central Texas. Her involvement in this initiative deepens her understanding of the challenges her clients care about and informs her work in helping them make meaningful, mission-aligned impact.

A lifelong learner, leader, and connector, Shelby holds an MBA from Seattle University, a graduate-level Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the Texas A&M Bush School of Government and Public Service, and a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP®) designation from the American College of Financial Services. She also earned a Certificate in Fundraising Management from the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.

Shelby is actively engaged in several professional networks, including PEAK Grantmaking, 21/64, the National Center for Family Philanthropy, Exponent Philanthropy, the Central Texas Funders Network, and, most recently, the Charitable Gift Planners of Austin. These affiliations reflect her dedication to continuous learning and her commitment to providing clients with informed, high-quality guidance.

Outside of her client work, Shelby serves on the board of the Austin Community Foundation Women’s Fund, which supports efforts to lift women in Central Texas out of poverty.
