Description: Non-cash assets represent a significant source of potential charitable contributions, yet achieving optimal outcomes with these gifts requires expertise and due diligence. Before accepting an illiquid gift, a charitable organization should take steps to understand potential tax and legal obligations for both the organization and the donor. This presentation will discuss wide-ranging tax cautions, including appraisal requirements for real estate, minerals interests, and other illiquid assets; partial interest and excess benefit concerns; IRS documentation requirements; and pointers for other nuanced gifts such as artisan donations, closely held securities, life estates, and royalties.
