Not Your Grandfather’s Donor Advised Fund

September 26, 2016 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Donor Advised Funds have been around as a charitable giving vehicle, primarily at community foundations, for nearly a century.  Over the past decade they have exploded in popularity, and as a result, the second most popular charity last year (measured by donated funds) was the donor advised fund arm of a national investment firm.
Learn how donor advised funds are a valuable and creative tool for charitable giving, tax planning and wealth preservation. Working with Austin Community Foundation can also add value for your client relationships, especially the rising millennial generation.

We’ll talk about DAF’s and why they are a great alternative to private foundations, what ACF is doing to use them differently than either commercial DAF’s or other community foundations to reach younger audiences.

Mike Nellis
President & CEO, Austin Community Foundation

As CEO of the Austin Community Foundation since 2014, Mike leverages resources and works collaboratively with a broad spectrum of stakeholders. Mike is responsible for leading the Foundation and increasing its role as a community resource through organizational excellence, collaborative leadership and strategic initiatives. During his first year he doubled the number of new charitable funds opened by individuals, families and companies and launched a multi-million dollar Impact Investment Fund to put more resources into the community.

Mike led the decade-long strategic reorganization of the downtown children’s museum into the Thinkery, a leader in science, technology, engineering and math education located in the Mueller neighborhood. Before joining the museum, Mike directed program development and consulting services for Greenlights, then a start-up nonprofit management service organization. Prior to moving to Austin in 2001, Mike spearheaded the regional expansion of Tides, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that connects donors and doers around common issues and goals.

Mike has served on the boards of several Austin nonprofits including I Live Here, I Give Here, Greenlights, Community Action Network and United Way Capital Area. Nellis was honored with a “Changemaker Award” from the Austin Young Chamber and “Austin Under 40” award and is a graduate of the 2011 Leadership Austin Essential Class.
